Van der Windt Verpakking in Honselersdijk, the Netherlands, introduces the new R-PET foil consisting of 50% recycled content. The new film has the same high-quality properties concerning sustainability, barriers and food safety as virgin PET. Also the processing properties are equal, making the new foil run with existing packaging processes without problems.
R-PET foil is a food-safe PCR (Post Consumer Reccling) packaging. Previously these PCR packaging were not suitable for foods. Thanks to an advanced depolymerization process (LuxPET process) all pollution is extracted from the material. Becasuse of this, the material is 100% food safe, according to the manufacturer. Another advantage is the fact that recycled material is not indistinguishable from virgin material by the LuxPET process, which means that all properties are preserved.
Circular packaging
The R-PET foil meets the requirements to reduce the environmental pressure of plastic packaging. The Dutch Government has made agreements with trade and industry and these are set out in the Plastic Pact. Herein is defined that plastic material should consist of recycled material for 35%. The recycled content is submitted by PCR, thus reducing the use of fossil raw materials. This allows for a lower carbon footprint. After use, the material is also 100% recyclable. The R-PET foil fits within the circular economy, claims Van der Windt Verpakking.
Application
R-PET foil has the same applications as PET foil. The foil is mainly used as topseal for (recycled) PET trays, but can also be used for other applications. R-PET foil is food safe and, by the barrier properties, suitable for packing among others vegetables, fruit, meat, chicken, fish, nuts and cheese.
