Statistieken achter gebruikte verf zijn schokkend. Volgens het AkzoNobel Recolour-rapport wordt 13% van verf verspild en 99% van die verf is verbrand of verstopt op stortplaatsen. Er wordt door de industrie veel moeite gedaan om manieren te vinden om verf te hergebruiken of te recyclen, en de hoeveelheid verf dat weggegooid wordt tot een minimum te beperken.
Op dit moment is elke verpakking dat in contact is geweest met verf geclassificeerd als gevaarlijk afval en wordt naar de vuilverbranding gebracht. Om de hoeveelheid vervuilde verpakkingen tot een minimum te helpen verminderen, ontwierp Rapak, onderdeel van DS Smith Plastics, een bag-in-box verpakkingsoplossing voor verf.
CO2-uitstoot
Het enige deel van de nieuwe bag-in-box voor verf dat in contact komt met het product is een dun en resistente flexibele zak die 50% lichter is dan blikjes en 76% minder kunststof gebruikt dan HDPE jerrycans van hetzelfde formaat. De kartonnen doos aan de buitenkant die de zak beschermt tijdens transport, is gemaakt van gerecycled materiaal, opvouwbaar en 100% recyclebaar. De nieuwe verpakking vertegenwoordigt 10% van de CO2-uitstoot ten opzichte van aluminium blikjes van dezelfde grootte en optimaliseert de logistiek door de vierkante vorm. De luchtdichte zak voorkomt dat de verf, lak of coating na opening opdroogt voor ongeveer 1,5 jaar, claimt DS Smith.

There has been a lot of effort by the industry to find ways to reuse or recycle paint and to reduce the amount of product thrown away to a minimum.
For now, any packaging that has been in contact with paint is classified as a hazardous waste and is sent to incineration. To help reduce the amount of contaminated packaging to a minimum, Rapak, part of DS Smith Plastics, has designed a bag-in-box packaging solution for paint.
CO2 emissions
In the new bag-in-box for paint, the only part in contact with the product is a thin and resistant flexible bag which is 50% lighter than tin cans and uses 76% less plastic than HDPE jerrycans of the same size. The outer cardboard box that protects the bag during transport and handling is made of recycled material, is foldable and 100% recyclable. In terms of CO2 emissions, the new packaging represents only a 10% carbon footprint of aluminium cans of the same size, drastically optimizing the logistics through the square shape. The air-tight bag prevents the paint, vanish or coating from drying up for as long as 1.5 years after opening, DS Smith claims.
