Mondi has entered the ice cream market in 2016 with the acquisition of Turkish flexible packaging producer Kalenobel. The company is based in Istanbul and has some production facilities in the northern Turkish city of Kirklareli.
Mondi Kalenobel is the European market leader in the field of cone sleeves, and producer of lids for ice cream cones, ice cream paper cups and push-up ice cream tubes, which is a smaller segment. Cone sleeves consists of kraft paper and aluminium, but the company continues to search for more sustainable material choices. Mondi Kalenobel is involved in testing plastic-free ice cream packaging that do not need a polymer layer. Different materials are tested for the production of push up and squeeze tubes and these technical tests will soon take place.
Cone-sleeve with a window
For family business Oexmann, producer of sugar cones in Gelsenkirchen, Germany, Mondi Kalenobe has manufactured the recently commercialized, custom made cone sleeve equipped with a clear plastic window, so the consumer can see the sugar waffle cone. The oval transparent window is made of biodegradable material. The packaging company has also created a small clear window in the lid, in the form of New Zealand island Kapiti, which was cut with a laser. These cone sleeves and lids are meant for ice cream producer Fonterra Brands in Auckland, New Zealand.
