Coca-Cola presented its very first prototype bottle ever, made with collected and recycled plastic from the sea. In this way, the company wants to demonstrate that it will be possible to reuse waste from the sea in recycled packaging suitable for food and beverage products in the future.
Through a collaboration between Ioniqa Technologies, Indorama Ventures, Mares Circulares and the Coca-Cola Company, approximately 300 prototype bottles have been created containing 25% recycled plastic from marine litter from the Mediterranean Sea and its beaches. The bottles are designed and developed to demonstrate the transformation potential of highly improved recycle technologies. These technologies can also recycle used plastic into quality plastic. This plastic can be used for food or beverage packaging, including material that would have been brought to incinerators or landfills in the past, Coca-Cola explains.
World without packaging waste
The Coca-Cola sustainability ambitions for 2025 are: for each sold can or bottle one is collected, all packaging will be 100% recyclable and all packaging contain at least 50% recycled material.
Speed up step-by-step plan
The soft drink manufacturer has announced further objectives to accelerate its step-by-step plan:
- Removing bit by bit all unnecessary or difficult to recycle plastic from the portfolio by lightening packaging and removing secondary plastic packaging.
- Working on 100% recycled or renewable materials in all plastic bottles, which means that each year more than 200,000 tonnes of new plastic are saved.
- Support for well-designed deposit systems in Western Europe, in countries where there is no successful alternative.
- Openness on the annual ecological footprint per packaging type, and reporting on performance in relation to the stated commitments and objectives.
